


See, if they didn't produce a Spider-Man film and soon then the contract would lapse and revert to Marvel so Marvel and Sony came to a deal (foreshadowing the later deal to bring Spidey to the MCU) where in exchange for an extension on the film rights Sony would give up the TV and merchandising rights and profits generated by the Spider-Man brand.
